Mouse colon cross-section 4x:

Serosa – The outermost cell layer which serves as a tissues boundry and which helps preserve the colon during motion

Longitudinal Muscle – A layer of smooth muscle that contributes to peristalsis

Crypts – The site for stem cells and rapidly proliferating transit amplifying cells. As daughter cells differentiate they gradually migrate upwards towards the surface epithelium

Haustrum – Small folds in the colon which have give it a segmented appearance

Peyer's Patch - Aggregated lymph nodules

Normal Mouse Colon I

Goblet Cells – Unicellular glands that secrete mucus to protect and lubricate epithelial surface

Crypts – The site for stem cells and rapidly proliferating transit amplifying cells.

Muscularis Mucosae – A thin layer of smooth muscle just below the crypts

Columnar Epithelium – Absorptive and secretory cells that line the surface of the colon

Submucosa – A layer of dense connective tissue that joins the smooth muscle (MM) to the mucosa

Normal Mouse Colon II

Columnar Epithelium - Absorptive and Secretory cells that line the surface of the colon
Goblet Cells - Unicellular glands that secrete mucus to protect and lubricate epithelial surface
• Crypts - The site for stem cells and rapidly proliferating transit amplifying cells.
• CBC (Crypt Base Columnar) Stem Cells - Pluripotent stem cells that differentiate into various epithelial lineages in the small intestine
• Muscularis Mucosae - A thin layer of smooth muscle just below the crypts
Peyer's Patch in Normal Mouse Colon
• Peyer's Patch - Aggregated lymph nodules
• Lymph Follicle - Region of densely populated lymph tissue
• Germinal Center - Area containing a high concentration of B cells
